And we are off! After months of preparation and lots of nerves, Alzheimer’s Research UK’s first ever overseas trek in Guatemala has kicked off. We flew out from London on Saturday and travelled overnight, arriving in Guatemala on Sunday.
Over the course of our 11-day trip, our team of 18 are going to be trekking up five active volcanoes to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Between us all, we’ve already raised £60,000 for dementia research and are hoping to collect more as our trip continues!
The next few days are going to be gruelling, but we are going to give it our all. We have all seen the devastation that dementia causes, but research can change this.
We spent Sunday relaxing and getting to know the history-steeped town of Antigua. We’ve been slowly getting used to the climate and doing some exploring ahead of our first trek tomorrow, where we will take on the Volcano Pacaya. It’s going to be a tough trek, but we are all excited (and just a little bit nervous!).
Keep an eye on our blog for updates from Team Guatemala and to find out how our first trek goes.
